Maker Community

I have this distinct memory of being 5 years old and playing with my little sister in this big room at a senior citizens rec room while my grandma sat and hand quilted with a group of women.  I remember not being tall enough to see over the edge of the table that they all sat around and jumping up and down for a glimpse of what was stealing my grandmother’s attention from me.  Later I was allowed to climb up on a chair to have a look.  The quilt was an intricate design with pinks, browns, cream, and orange.  Even at such a young age, I could appreciate the time these women put into the detail, though at the time it was surprising because it seemed to me that all they did was gab.

That was my first glimpse of a maker community, where women could gather together and share in life, love, and the joy of making.  Little did I know then that I would make some of my dearest friends through making and crafting.

Throughout my life I have seen women of all different backgrounds come together to make and shine through creating.  Leaning on each other for help, guidance, and encouragement along the way.  No matter the craft that links them, many women love to share what they do with others.

Making crafts from paper, yarn, and metal, making with cloth and thread, making food and setting a table, making beauty through hair and makeup, making a house a home, making music, the list goes on and on.  In each of these, we are creators and an image of God.  What is awesome about being inherently creative as human beings, is that whatever your craft or gift, there is a community out there to support you and build you up.

God calls us to be in community together.  To love others, encourage one another, and live in harmony.  One thing that certainly surprised me when I opened my Etsy shop, was the outpouring of support from other makers on Instagram.  There is a huge community there of other Maker Mamas that just want to see everyone be successful.  I have spent hours planning, laughing, and praying with these women.

It is our hope that you can find a community of friends where you encourage each other in your God given gifts and truly cherish each other’s uniqueness.  We hope you stay tuned this month as we have some fun ideas of how you can come together and build a community of makers to support you.

Christ encourages you, and his love comforts you. God’s Spirit unites you, and you are concerned for others. Now make me completely happy! Live in harmony by showing love for each other. Be united in what you think, as if you were only one person. Don’t be jealous or proud, but be humble and consider others more important than yourselves. Care about them as much as you care about yourselves.
Philippians 2:1-4
